Poetry By Cap'n Meryl

Cap'n Meryl is busy writing her second book. It is scheduled to be published by Thomas Dunne Books, a division of St. Martin's Press, in 2006.

She has also written several poems, several of which you can link to below.

Cap'n Meryl is also working on some children's books based upon some of her poetry and is collaborating with world-renowned artist Suzy Spafford.

The Irritated Oyster
Just a whimsical notion about oysters talking about their "jobs."

Ode To A Jellyfish
I wrote this after being stung on a Kona layover.  There were warnings on the local news but I didn't see them.  I did kind of wonder why I was the only one in the water, though.

Night Flight
I was feeling sentimental during one beautiful, quiet night flight to Europe.  Downright mushy, as a matter of fact.

Over The Pole To The Orient
My first time on this route when I flew from New York's JFK to Tokyo.

Wish Upon A Starfish

One evening, on a flight from Tokyo to Hawaii, my copilot and I were busily pointing out shooting stars to each other.  There were more than usual that night.  We would keep asking each other “did you make a wish?” every single time.  I wrote this poem during that flight.  The word “starfish” just popped into my head.  Some of my other poems, you’ll notice, also have a somewhat nautical theme.
