Plumbin' On The 10646 viewsI got my turbojet flight engineer rating on this United Airlines DC-10 when I was just 27 and still flying for a commuter airline. I got my captain's rating at the same time, the youngest person and first female in the world to do so according to the FAA examiner who gave me my check ride. The checkride was in a real airplane, by the way, although all the training was done in a simulator at United. 1980

Army Girl580 viewsMy first Christmas in the Army happened just as I got to boot camp in Alabama. We were given two weeks off, so I rented a Cherokee Six, filled it with my Army friends, and flew to California. The story is in my book "The World At My Feet." The photo was taken by the San Diego Union, which did a story about my flight. 1974

Governor Wallace and Me528 viewsThis is Governor George Wallace and me, and was taken after he had been shot. I used to fly with him sometimes in his Jet Commander when I wasn't busy with Army duties. Sometimes his crew even let me do some of the flying. 1975

Getting Promoted359 viewsEven though I was flying civilian aircraft on the side, officially I trained to be an air traffic controller in the Army. I'm getting a double promotion here after getting the highest score ever on the air traffic control exam. It was all pilot stuff I knew anyway. 1975

The SST (Stainless Steel Tub)305 viewsThis is my good friend Channing Clark who died just before my book was published and never knew he was in it. Standing atop his beloved Fleetwings Seabird. Only six were built and this is the only one that survived. We used to land it on lakes and he appeared in several TV commercials and shows with his plane. 1978

Mt. McKinley, Alaska356 viewsMy very first flight for Wien Air Alaska, when I was 28, was for some photos that later appeared in magazine ads. I was the flight engineer on the B-727 (closest to the mountain). A Learjet flew alongside us and the B-737 to get the photos. We were at 18,000, below the top of the mountain, which is 20,320 feet. 1981
