My flight this week took me from Chicago to San Francisco, Honolulu, Tokyo, back to Honolulu and home to Denver. I hadn’t been to Waikiki Beach since my DC-10 days in the late 80’s and was long overdue for my Hawaiian beach fix. Getting there twice on this trip was an unexpected bonus. We had three pilots this trip; I was the captain, I had one “flying pilot” and one “relief pilot”, required when a flight is over eight hours. (Two relief pilots are due if the flight is scheduled over twelve hours.) The flight from Honolulu to Tokyo was the longest segment at eight hours, fifty minutes. It’s always fun to take a break, go watch a movie and snack on some first-class goodies: ice cream sundaes, cheese platters, shrimp cocktail, etc. Not overeating on the plane is a serious challenge for some of us (that would mean me). Being on reserve for a global airline is such an interesting experience. In the course of about six hours, I was told I might be assigned to a charter consisting of a presidential press aircraft flying to Sao Paulo, Chile and Bogata, Columbia, following President Bush around. Then I was told I might wind up flying a trip out of JFK that wound up in Tokyo and Singapore. Ultimately, I was assigned the trip I described above to Honolulu and Tokyo. When you’re flying an aircraft like the B-777 which goes all over the world, it’s exciting to know you might wind up just about anyplace on the globe. Not knowing where in advance is, to me, part of the fun of the job. On the way back from Tokyo we took off at night, flew right by Midway Island and into a very red dawn. The air was crystal clear and we could see all the main islands of Hawaii as we approached. It was just spectacular. When a Honolulu controller quizzed me on how the flight from Japan was, my response was, “Almost too cool for words” and I meant it. Passing through LAX, I stopped by the newsstand in Terminal 7 and signed some books at their request. This is how I came to be contacted for an appearance on The View. I spoke directly with a producer at this event last July in New York. This is the event which puts you face to face with producers at The Oprah Winfrey Show, The View, other national TV shows, many prominent magazines and dozens of radio talk show hosts. I have done at least 40 interviews of one kind or another since attending this “Publicity Summit.” I’ve had to turn down some of them for lack of time. This event is pricey (although not with relation to what it’s worth) but well worth the price of admission as it lets you cut through all the red tape and talk directly to media decision-makers. Whether you have a product now or are just working on one, it’s worth taking a look at attending this Summit. There is an opportunity for a refund if you get there and decide it’s not for you after all, but I haven’t heard of anyone asking for a refund. Flying to Japan

I am happy to report that my first flight in command of a B-777 went off without a hitch. It’s been a very long time—over fifteen years—since I’ve flown the North Pacific. Last time was as a copilot in a DC-10. Fortunately I remembered the way to Japan: north to Alaska, west to Russia, then left (!) This was my first trip ever to Osaka. To say these first flights in my new airplane was exhilarating would be a gross understatement.
This was a new experience for me, with three copilots. This will be explained in an upcoming column but basically any flight over eight hours requires an extra pilot, and over twelve hours two extra pilots. We took turns going back and watching movies or sleeping (they slept—I was too excited to sleep).
Book sales are still increasing. Both DIA’s and LAX’s newsstands in United’s terminals sold out and more books were sent. I’ve been invited to sign books at both airports and will try to do this some time in December. I’ll let you know should you happen to be flying United that day and would like to stop b

B-777 Captain

This week’s newsletter is being written by the newest B-777 captain! What a thrill to be finished with school and FINALLY being able to fly a real airplane again. Simulators are great, but they don’t even bring you any coffee or anything. That’s no good!

Depending upon how soon you read this after receipt, I am possibly over the North Pacific on my way to Osaka, Japan. This Sunday I’ll be flying an overnight domestic trip from Chicago to San Francisco, Denver, then back to Chicago, and then leaving Tuesday for Osaka. I will be thinking of you as I sip my Japanese tea on my layover. Incidentally, if you ever wind up on my flight (it’s actually happened once already) please let me know you’re there—either before or after the flight, or by note via flight attendant during the flight. I always announce the pilots’ names over the public address system.
Book sales continue to increase. Barnes & Noble bookstores contacted me this week to let me know they’re starting to stock, and several large airport bookstore distributors have also ordered. This is a huge victory because it is rare-to-never that airport bookstores with such limited space will sell other than mainstream-published books. I was able to convince them that if ever there was a book appropriate for airports—this is it.

The World At My Feet

I have now been officially contacted for an appearance on “The View” which airs live on weekdays at 11:00 AM New York time. The date is not yet firm but for now it looks like sometime in December. I’ll publish the date as soon as I know for those of you who may be interested in watching the show. Last Monday’s appearance on an ABC News show sent book sales soaring right through the roof. This week I’ll enter my fourth and last week of B-777 training. This week we flew from London to Washington, D.C. in the simulator except, as always, we didn’t make it very far before we blew an engine and had to turn back. We wound up doing an emergency landing in Dublin. We also practiced short-field landings, including some out at Lihue on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.
This Sunday I’m tentatively scheduled to take my first REAL trip (with a check pilot) from Chicago to Osaka, with some domestic flying to San Francisco and Denver. This will be my first time as captain on this airplane (!).
